The REIT’s Executive Chairman Michael D. McKee has assumed the role of interim president and CEO. “[Martin] leaving is not a surprise, I don’t think, to anyone,” Omotayo Tejumade Okusanya, an analyst with Jefferies LLC, told SHN. “People have always looked at the hiring of Justin Hutchens as the first sign that there was going to be a new management team there.”

Leadership Series: T. Andrew Smith, President & CEO of Brookdale Senior Living—SHN sat down with T. Andrew “Andy” Smith, president and CEO of Brookdale Senior Living (NYSE: BKD), at Brookdale’s Brentwood, Tennessee, headquarters to learn about how he got his start in senior living, how exactly he manages a workforce 82,000 strong and how he learned early on never to use the 8-letter “F word” in senior housing.

Dished: ‘Cutthroat’ Competition Hits Senior Living Dining—SHN spoke with Morrison Community Living about its most recent ‘Food Fight’ competition, an annual event in which a handful of senior living chefs participate in a final, head-to-head challenge after a series of preliminary, regional face-offs. The June 15 competition took place at Hillcrest Community in LaVerne, California, and was hosted by “Chef Jet” Tila, an American celebrity chef who specializes in Szechuan and other Chinese cuisine and has made appearances on the Food Network’s “Chopped” and “Iron Chef America,” among other shows.

Blue Harbor Taps Former Merrill Gardens President as CEO—In picking its first CEO Tana Gall, Blue Harbor Senior Living has found a leader with deep industry experience to take the reins as the company grows in new directions. In the past, Gall served as president both of Merrill Gardens and Leisure Care, two of the largest senior living providers in the nation, both headquartered in Seattle. Most recently, she co-founded and was principal of senior living consulting firm 2Ten Consulting.
